UEFA make Marco Asensio announcement after Aston Villa v Club Brugge
Marco Asensio came off the bench to score two for Aston Villa against Club Brugge on Wednesday.
The Villans just needed to avoid defeat against the Belgian outfit on 12 March to earn a place in the quarter-final of the Champions League.
They did exactly that with a 3-0 win to make it 6-1 on aggregate to set up a mouthwatering tie with PSG in April.
The result could have proved to be so much different for Unai Emery’s side without Asensio who has now been included in an official announcement from UEFA.

Asensio included in UEFA Team of the Week
It is fair to say that the Holte end has a new favourite son in the shape of the former Real Madrid man.
Since joining on loan, the Spain international has netted seven goals with all contributing to wins across three different competitions.
Arguably the standout moment of his spell in B6, so far, came against Brugge as he came off the bench to net another two to help secure a famous result.
Given how impactful the 29-year-old was at Villa Park, it won’t come as a surprise to see the attacking midfielder be named in the UEFA Team of the Week on Thursday (13 March).
The Villa loanee has been included in the side alongside huge names like Pedri and Harry Kane while former teammates and soon to be opposition players, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Nuno Mendes also took a spot in the side.
Aston Villa fans have fallen for a loan player in Asensio
Never fall for a loan player.
That’s what they tell you but unfortunately, the Villa Park faithful have done exactly that with Asensio.
There is good reason for them to have done so after what has been an electric start to his loan spell, despite making just three starts.
Games played | Goals | Minutes per goal | |
Marco Asensio | 8 | 7 | 54.7 |
The Spaniard’s link up with Marcus Rashford has been superb and that has helped to contribute a positive run of results in B6.
With a trip to face his parent club in PSG coming up, the 29-year-old will be keen to prove himself in Paris after a difficult time after joining from Real Madrid.
It will certainly be interesting to see if Villa make his move permanent but after his recent form, there doesn’t appear to be a reason why not right now.
