Premier League release statement on huge Wolves v Aston Villa controversy
Aston Villa had their equaliser against Wolves ruled out as Morgan Rogers was deemed to have impeded Nelson Semedo in the build up, the Premier League stated.
Donyell Malen thought he had equalised for the Villans in the 54th minute at Molineux on Saturday (1 February), but the assistant referee raised his flag, with VAR upholding the decision.
While Rogers didn’t touch the ball, he was in an offside position and was adjudged to have interfered with play by hindering Semedo’s ability to challenge for the ball.
The Premier League said in its statement on X (1 February): “The referee’s call of no goal due to an offside offence is checked and confirmed by VAR – with Rogers in an offside position and deemed to be impacting the ability of Semedo to play or challenge for the ball.”

While the Lions midfielder is indeed in an offside position, it’s debatable whether Semedo could have done anything regarding the goal.
