Aston Villa ‘to hijack £50m Tottenham-Mathys Tel transfer’ under one condition
Aston Villa could make Mathys Tel particular guarantees to beat Tottenham to his signature.
As reported by Le Parisien (30 January), Tottenham have reached a verbal agreement with Bayern Munich over a £50million transfer for Tel. However, Aston Villa could look to hijack this move, with Florian Plettenberg reporting via X (30 January) that Unai Emery’s side have made contact with Bayern.

And ex-Villa scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – believes the West Midlands outfit could beat Tottenham to Tel’s signature if they can make him first-team guarantees.
“There is always the possibility that Villa could look to hijack Spurs’ move for Tel,” King said.
“It is as much the agent controlling the player as it is the player controlling where he goes. Again, this will come down to money and what suits the agent and Tel.
“Villa are riding high and Spurs are struggling in the league. However, it doesn’t take away from the fact that the facilities Tottenham have got are far greater than anything in the Premier League.
“Having said that, what Tel seems to be interested in is how much he is going to play. Therefore, if Villa were to promise him first-team football, there is no reason why they couldn’t beat Spurs to his signature. He needs first-team guarantees, that is what I’m sure about.”
Aston Villa to replace Jhon Duran with Mathys Tel?
If Villa could bring in Tel after selling Duran so late in the window, it would be an impressive bit of business. However, offering the Frenchman first-team guarantees might be difficult.
Duran and Ollie Watkins have been competing for a place all season, with tension mooted between the pair, and now that the former is on his way out of the club, Tel might just take his place.
Therefore, that would mean competing with Watkins for first-team football.

As a result, that is far from a guarantee of playing time, which could make a deal difficult to agree.
