Rogers the hero in 10/10, Martinez flops – Aston Villa player ratings v Celtic

Aston Villa came away 4-2 winners as they took on Celtic in Champions League action with Morgan Rogers starring with a hat-trick.

The Villains welcomed the Scottish Premiership leaders to Villa Park on Wednesday (29 January) and came away with all three points to secure direct passage to the last 16.

Although Unai Emery’s side went 2-0 up after 10 minutes, Celtic were able to make it 2-2 by half-time.

However, Villa came out on top with a 4-2 win after Ollie Watkins restored the lead and, despite the striker missing a penalty in the second half, Rogers got his hat-trick to complete the triumph.

Here, Villa News rates the performances of each Villa player out of ten.

Emi Martínez – 4

Conceded two goals and the goalkeeper certainly should have done better in both instances.

Matty Cash (off for John McGinn 29′) – 5

Didn’t do much wrong but was unlucky to be forced off through injury on the half-hour mark with John McGinn coming on in his place.

Ezri Konsa – 5

Lost one of his two duels and didn’t win any of his tackles, which is not good enough on the night where Celtic scored two.

Lamare Bogarde – 6

Probably wasn’t up to his best level and what you might expect but a solid performance with a number of contributions in the game.

Lucas Digne (off for Ian Maatsen 73′) – 5

Won two of his duels and lost three as well as winning just one tackle, not the levels you’d expect from the experienced player.

Jacob Ramsey produces a strong performance

Jacob Ramsey – 8

An excellent performance and Ramsey created the most chances in the game. However, some target practice may be needed in training for the 23-year-old!

Youri Tielemans – 6

Decent performance from Youri Tielemans and contributed to the game but didn’t do as much as we know he’s capable of.

Boubacar Kamara – 7

Completed the most passes in the game and contributed with a number of defensive actions throughout.

Leon Bailey – 7

A strong performance from the 27-year-old who contributed to his side’s attacking efforts throughout the evening.

Morgan Rogers shines

Morgan Rogers – 10

Scorer of two early goals for his side that gave them a strong start, the second of which was stunning and contributed to the game throughout. A fully deserved hat-trick came in the second half.

Ollie Watkins – 7

Did score but certainly should’ve scored more of his chances and an incredibly poor penalty miss that could have killed off the game for his side.

Substitutions

John McGinn (on for Matty Cash 29′) – 7

Contributed plenty to his side’s attacking efforts and was especially good for his side’s third goal of the evening.

Ian Maatsen (on for Lucas Digne 73′) – 6

It was a bit too late for Ian Maatsen to have any real impact in the game but he didn’t do anything wrong.
