Diego Carlos transfer clause mooted as Aston Villa exit confirmed
Aston Villa could yet profit further from Diego Carlos’ transfer to Fenerbahçe.
Villa confirmed via the club’s official website on Thursday (23 January) that Carlos had joined Fenerbahçe, in a deal which is believed to be worth £8.45million [via BBC Sport, 23 January], money which Unai Emery’s side are expected to reinvest in the squad before 3 February.
Unfortunately, Emery has been dealt a blow with the Villans experiencing a major setback in their pursuit of signing a replacement for Carlos [via Alberto Fernández, 23 January].
However, ex-Villa scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – has shared some potential positive news, with a sell-on fee mooted as part of Carlos’ move to Fenerbahçe.
“It sounds like they agreed a reasonable fee,” King said.
“There could be a sell-on fee included in this deal, we will have to wait and see on that. However, Carlos’ main aim would have been to play first-team football.
“He wasn’t getting regular playing time at Villa. Therefore, this deal makes sense, I’m sure José Mourinho will play him. For some of these footballers, it isn’t so much about money, it is about playing football, and I think Carlos comes into that category.”
Aston Villa include a sell-on clause in Deigo Carlos’ transfer to Fenerbahçe?
Villa supporters are unlikely to lose much sleep over Carlos’ departure from the club, especially after some of the Brazillian’s performances this season.
Overall, agreeing a fee of £8m-plus for an ageing squad player is a good bit of business for Villa. Therefore, if there is a sell-on fee included, that will only serve as an added bonus.
However, that potential transfer clause won’t be of immediate concern to Villa supporters or Emery. What will be of immediate concern is signing a new defender.
Villa have been busy in the winter transfer window, and are currently working to tie down some of their more talented young players [via Sky Sports News, 22 January].

However, now that Carlos has officially left, a replacement needs to be signed before 3 February.
