Tyrone Mings blasted after ‘shocking’ first half moment in Monaco v Aston Villa

Sam Matterface tore Tyrone Mings to shreds after Aston Villa gave up an early lead against Monaco in the Champions League on Tuesday.

With Diego Carlos and Pau Torres absent from the squad, the 31-year-old was partnered up with Ezri Konsa in the centre of defence, both of whom made awful errors during the first half on 21 January.

Mings’ mistake was the costliest of them all, however, as Wilfried Singo scored from a corner routine, a set-piece which only occurred due to the Villa man’s poor attempt at a pass into midfield.

Speaking live via talkSPORT2 [21 January, 5:56pm], Sam Matterface said: “It all stems back to Tyrone Mings playing that shocking ball towards Tielemans, which was pinched.”

Andy Townsend agreed, stating: “He didn’t need to do it, did he? Didn’t need to do it at all. They’ve started the game so comfortably, Villa, and just one lapse of concentration… There you go.”

Tyrone Mings hands setback to Aston Villa against Monaco

Despite a bright start from Unai Emery’s men in Monaco, all of that work was quickly undone after the French side capitalised on slack defending and passing from the Premier League side.

The Villans can all but guarantee a spot in the play-offs, if not the next round via an automatic spot, but not if one of the most experienced players in the team is going to make such a mistake.

It is also not the first time Mings has been at fault in the Champion League, having gifted Club Brugge a 1-0 win in November after picking the ball up in his own penalty area.

These are the kinds of mistakes that Emery’s side cannot afford to make if Villa are to advance to the next round of the Champions League, and that challenge has been made even harder after Monaco’s early opener.

Emery will be absolutely furious with his players’ first-half performance, one which must be rectified in the second half.
