‘Matty Cash shining light’ amid ‘terrible Aston Villa showing’ v Monaco
Matty Cash stood out despite a poor Aston Villa performance in the defeat against Monaco.
The Villans fell to a second Champions League defeat of the campaign on Tuesday (21 January), losing 1-0 after an eighth-minute Wilfried Singo header.
Despite a host of chances for Ollie Watkins, Leon Bailey and Morgan Rogers, Unai Emery’s side failed to get on the score sheet and suffered the punishment for that.
Regardless of the defeat, Cash can hold his head up high as arguably the best player on the pitch for the away side.
Matty Cash was on top Aston Villa form v Monaco
With the B6 club conceding from a corner, there was very little that the Poland international could do to stop the Ivorian from netting.
Missing out on a clean sheet is the only blip on the 27-year-old’s performance on the night in the Louis II Stadium where he won 100 per cent of his tackles [FotMob].
The former Nottingham Forest man also chipped in with another seven defensive actions while also winning an excellent 10 duels which was the most out of any player on either side.
This summed up Cash’s attitude on the night as he also wasn’t afraid to get forward when given the chance as he completed one dribble and had four touches in the Monaco penalty box.

With two shots on goal and six passes into the final third, there is plenty to say positive about the Pole, even if he didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet.
Given all the criticism that Villa’s number two has come under during his career at Villa Park, this was one of his better nights and deserves all the praise he gets.
