Aston Villa player ratings v Monaco – 3/10 has absolute shocker, Watkins 4/10

Aston Villa fell to a second Champions League defeat of the season, losing 1-0 away to Monaco on Tuesday.

The first-half started in typical fashion for the Villans, conceding from their opposition’s first chance as Wilfried Singo powered home a header.

This is how the score remained until the final whistle but there were still excellent chances for Ollie Watkins, Leon Bailey and Morgan Rogers throughout the clash.

Now the B6 club will have to wait until the visit of Celtic next week before they can secure their progress to the round of 16 or play-off tie.

Here, Villa News rates the performances of Unai Emery’s side after their defeat in Europe.

Emi Martinez – 6

The Argentine had very little to do other than pick the ball out of the net on the night. Made saves when required but will be gutted after failing to keep a clean sheet again.

Matty Cash – 6

The Poland international was on good form down the right-hand side. Cash arguably should have scored but continued to show up when needed and was at times Villa’s best player.

Ezri Konsa – 5

Konsa was typically positive on the ball but conceded once again in a defensive issue that can not be ignored.

Tyrone Mings – 6

Mings was superb at times against the Monegasque side. Despite a frustrating lapse in the first half, the rest of his performance was positive and there is no doubt Monaco would have scored more if he wasn’t playing.

Lucas Digne – 6

The left-back was a useful outlet down the left but failed to create any chances of quality throughout the clash. He was disappointed to be taken off but that doesn’t excuse his actions, which saw him pick up a booking.

Boubacar Kamara – 6

Kamara kept Villa ticking as he so often does but was just let down by those around him. The Frenchman can only do so much defensively and needs his teammates to match his level.

Youri Tielemans – 6

The former Monaco man was clean and tidy on his return to the Louis II Stadium but didn’t rip up any trees while being another Villa player who failed to create any real chances.

Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins frustrate Aston Villa v Monaco

Emi Buendia – 6

It was a positive showing from the diminutive Argentine on the whole but again, did he create any clear-cut chances? No, not really. His performance may save him from being shipped out for another week.

Leon Bailey – 3

The Bailey of last season has vanished and that has never been on show more than his performance against Monaco. The Jamaica international did very little to impress Emery before being taken off and replaced by Jhon Duran in the second half.

Morgan Rogers – 4

A quiet night for Rogers who generally failed to take advantage of the space he was afforded by the Monaco midfield. A disappointing night for Rogers in the Champions League.

Ollie Watkins – 4

Watkins just had to score. He had to score that late first-half chance. Another big chance missed for the England international who just can’t seem to find the net before missing a clear-cut opportunity. Frustrating.
