Carragher slams Aston Villa coach after Neville said who offends him at Arsenal

Jamie Carragher has slammed Aston Villa set piece coach Austin MacPhee after Gary Neville picked out Arsenal counterpart Nicolas Jover as “the most annoying guy in football”.

The Scottish coach has taken charge of set-pieces at Villa Park since joining from FC Midtjylland under Dean Smith.

There is no doubt that the 45-year-old has improved the Villans, which has been mirrored at the Emirates with their German coach.

The behaviour of the Gunners’ set-piece coach hasn’t gone down well with Neville who heavily criticised him on The Overlap (16 January)

He said: “Are we alright with his [Arteta’s] set piece coach still? I called him the most annoying guy in football. I’m doubling down on it, it’s offending me every week.”

Carragher added: “The Aston Villa one [MacPhee] does the same, he likes to come out.”

Neville replied with an expletive comment, saying: “I’m doing the game on Saturday night. With the two set-piece coaches. Unai Emery and Mikel Arteta may as well sit the [EXPLETIVE] down basically.”

It is somewhat bizarre to see pundits as senior as Neville and Carragher to be singling out individual members of the coaching staff for such comments.

It is unlikely that they would ever go on an expletive rant about Unai Emery or Mikel Arteta, so it isn’t ok to do it about MacPhee.

The Scotland international coach has had a positive impact during his spell with the Villans and has played a role under three managers in B6.

That says a lot about his qualities as a coach and when a manager as experienced and high-level as Emery wants you, it says a lot about his ability to improve Villa regardless of outside opinions.
