‘Onana delighted with Aston Villa boost’ as Emery shares fresh injury update
Amadou Onana is bound to be delighted by the latest injury update that has been shared by Unai Emery at Aston Villa.
The Villans are preparing for a clash at Goodison Park on Wednesday (14 January) and have been dealt a blow ahead of the trip to Merseyside.
In recent weeks, Pau Torres and John McGinn were taken off due to injury and Ross Barkley faced a similar fate against West Ham on Friday (10 January).
Ahead of the Premier League meeting with the Toffees, Emery confirmed, via the B6 club on X, that the trio would be absent through injury.
He said: “Pau Torres, John McGinn and Ross Barkley, they are not available for tomorrow.
“Barkley, more or less, is two-three weeks or more.”
Although this news will be frustrating for the Spanish head coach, it could prove to be the break that Onana needed after a tough few weeks.
Amadou Onana to be delighted by Ross Barkley update at Aston Villa
The Belgium international had a superb opening to the season as he netted two in his opening three appearances for the Villans.
The 23-year-old also netted against Young Boys in the Champions League in September but went without a goal until the FA Cup clash against West Ham.
This strike and Barkley’s injury could provide an opportunity for the ex-Evertonian to prove why he deserves to be a regular starter.
Against the Hammers, Onana replaced the injured Barkley and was able to maintain an 88 per cent pass accuracy which saw him create one chance for his teammates [FotMob].
The midfielder got on the scoresheet in controversial circumstances but wasn’t only an influence in the opposition penalty area.
The Belgian also chipped in defensively with one tackle, one clearance and a further four defensive actions as well as four recoveries.
Add to this, three duels won and a 100 per cent aerial win rate and Emery has got an all-action midfielder ready to come into the starting 11.
The clash against his former side could prove to be the perfect opportunity to prove himself to his manager and if he can maintain a similar performance level, he may prove to be undroppable when Barkley returns.
