Tielemans struggles in 3/10, 8/10 shines – Aston Villa player ratings v West Ham

Amadou Onana played a starring role as Aston Villa knocked West Ham United out of the FA Cup on Friday night.

The Belgian, who started the night on the bench (10 January), replaced Ross Barkley after 23 minutes, with a second blow coming right after Lucas Paqueta’s opening goal.

Onana, however, equalised with 20 minutes left to play before Morgan Rogers smashed home the winner, firing home a cross from Ollie Watkins, seeing the Villans progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Aston Villa News rated each player’s performance out of 10 (All statistics via FotMob).

Robin Olsen – 6

Absolutely nothing the goalkeeper could do about Paqueta’s opener at Villa Park, but remained calm in possession with a 95 per cent passing accuracy and kept coming for crosses.

Ian Maatsen – 6

Maatsen continued to be one of the main attacking threats for Villa, unleashing four shots from full-back, and attempting five long balls, but struggled to keep Mohammed Kudus quiet, winning just 44 per cent of his ground duels.

Tyrone Mings – 5

The 31-year-old was almost too comfortable in possession, almost being caught out by the Hammers’ speedy attackers on more than one occasion.

Ezri Konsa – 7

Solid as ever in the centre of defence, completing 97 per cent of his passes, winning 50 per cent of his ground duels, making five recoveries and completing 100 per cent of his dribbles.

Matty Cash (Off for Kosta Nedeljkovic 72′) – 7

Struggled to keep hold of the Hammers’ attack in the opening stages but grew into the game, winning 100 per cent of his tackles, completed 95 per cent of his passes, and even created one chance.

Youri Tielemans – 3

An awful showing from the Belgian, far below what has come to be expected of him. Zero per cent shot accuracy, completed 83 per cent of his passes, won 25 per cent of his ground duels and was dispossessed twice.

Boubacar Kamara (Off for Emi Buendia 72′) – 7

Solid as a rock in the middle of the park. Nothing special from the Frenchman while in possession but never did anything to put his team in jeopardy.

Morgan Rogers – 5

Attempted to push his team up the pitch but was extremely wasteful, completing just 67 per cent of his passes and zero crosses, though he managed to strike the winning goal to hide his failings somewhat.

Ross Barkley (Off for Amadou Onana 23′) – N/A

Has been in fine form for the Villans recently but was handed an early blow at Villa Park. Not on the pitch long enough to stamp his mark.

Leon Bailey (Off for Jacob Ramsey 72′) – 4

Struggled to help Cash in the defensive third, winning just 20 per cent of his ground duels, and was far from impactful further forward by creating a three half-chances and being dispossessed twice.

Ollie Watkins – 4

An almost-invisible display from the England international for much of the game, touching the ball just 22 times and winning zero per cent of his ground duels. Popped up with a timely assist but offered little else.

Substitutes

Amadou Onana (On for Barkley 23′) – 8

Popped up with the all-important equaliser, having not actually started the game. Went on to win 60 per cent of his ground duels and 100 per cent of his aerial duels while remaining calm in possession.

Jacob Ramsey (On for Bailey 72′) – 7

Extremely lively after coming onto the pitch. Extremely unlucky to be denied by the post and put Potter’s side under immense pressure for the closing stages.

Emi Buendia (On for Kamara 72′) – N/A

Kosta Nedeljkovic (On for Cash 72′) – N/A
