Premier League slammed after ‘Unbelievable’ Aston Villa reveal

Dan Bardell has slammed the Premier League after “unbelievable” audio was released of the match officials deciding to send Aston Villa forward Jhon Duran off against Newcastle.

Villa’s defeat to the Magpies in December brought enough unsettlement given the result but the sending off of Duran still remains the biggest talking point from the clash.

Duran was deemed to have acted within the means of violent conduct when footage showed the Colombian standing on the back of Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar with audio released from the VAR operation [Sky Sports, 7 January] showcasing the lack of understanding from officials.

Anthony Taylor was advised by two officials that the incident appeared to be an accident and yet still brandished a red card with Bardell taking to X to react to the “unbelievable” decision.

His post on 7 January reads: “That Duran red card audio is UNBELIEVABLE, genuinely what’s the point of VAR??

“Tedious.”

It still leaves many questions to be asked as to how the officials can deem the incident to have been violent conduct but even more so, how Taylor wasn’t advised to have another look at the incident given the fact that two officials suggested to him it was accidental.

Realistically, what else can Duran have done in that situation?

Villa arent the first nor will they be the last to face the brunt of an awful piece of officiating and the standards within the country are becoming a great concern across all levels of English football.

It feels like every week a side are having to cope with a dreadful decision which fails to take into account the basics of football.

Duran’s absence is of course a big blow given how well he has fared so far this season and while there have been times his attitude has caused concern, it’s hard to feel anything other than sympathy on this occasion.
