Aston Villa to be fined by FA after Monchi and Damian Vidagany comments

Aston Villa are expected to be fined by the Football Association as the Jhon Duran saga rumbles on.

Duran was sent off in contentious circumstances as Villa were beaten 3-0 by Newcastle in the Premier League at St James’ Park on Boxing Day (26 December), with an ex-FIFA referee detailing one thing he noticed about the challenge.

Villa’s appeal against the red card was rejected by the FA on Friday (27 December), a decision criticised by Monchi via his personal X account (27 December).

Director of Football Operations Damian Vidagany also spoke out against the FA via his personal X account (27 December), with calls made for the Villa officials to be punished by the FA.

And ex-Villa scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – has speculated that the club could also be punished as a result of Monchi and Vidagany’s comments.

“Monchi and Vidagany could be charged by the FA,” King said.

“One thing we’ve learnt is that you can’t criticise the FA or the Premier League, otherwise you or your club will end up with a fine. However, I do think that the sending-off was harsh. I think the nature of that challenge, you were always going to have arms and legs flying around.

“However, officials need to be respectful. If you’ve appealed, then you’ve appealed, if the appeal has been rejected, you have to accept that. It will be interesting to see how Monchi and Vidagany are dealt with after making statements of this nature. I don’t think that was very smart, something is going to happen here, that is for sure.”

Aston Villa to be fined by the Football Association?

It is easy to see why some at Villa are frustrated by the Duran situation. The decision to send Duran off wasn’t exactly clear cut, with Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer both critical of the sending off.

In addition, Duran has been on fire as of late and is one of the club’s most important players this season. Therefore, Villa were always going to appeal.

However, no matter how they feel, hitting out against the FA publically is not the right way to go about things, and if the club are fined as a result, there can be few complaints.
