Duran red card to be rescinded after Aston Villa incident v Newcastle – expert
Jhon Duran’s red card must be rescinded after the Aston Villa star was sent off against Newcastle United on Thursday, Ian Darke has said.
Referee Anthony Taylor clearly thought he had no other option but to send the 21-year-old off, having been accused of deliberate contact with Fabian Schar on 26 December.
The decision was one of the biggest talking points as Unai Emery’s side were dealt a tough 3-0 defeat at St James’ Park, and Darke now believes the red card should be rescinded by the Premier League.
Taking to X on Friday [27 December], Darke wrote: “The red card shown to Jhon Duran of Villa has to be rescinded. No bad intent there at all. Accidental.
After a fan questioned his belief, he said: “Nobody on Match of the Day (all ex-pros) thought it was a red.”
Jhon Duran’s red card to be reversed after Aston Villa defeat?
While it cannot be absolutely proven, the decision likely had a telling say on Villa’s Boxing Day defeat away from Villa Park, with the Magpies taking full control after the sending-off.
The Colombian forward is known for picking up yellow cards and has accumulated quite a few during his time in England, but this should be no reason for an official guessing about a decision of such magnitude.
Emery’s side missed the chance to move within touching distance of the top-four spots in the Premier League and Duran could have had a telling say on the game had he still been on the pitch.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has even admitted the decision might have been a little harsh [The Independent], which should tell the Premier League everything it needs to know about potentially overturning the red card.
Of course, Ollie Watkins is more than capable enough of filling the striker role but being without their joint-top scorer should be a non-negotiable during such a busy winter period.
