Shearer hails ‘superb’ Aston Villa star after what John Stones did for Man City
Alan Shearer lauded Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans as “superb” for the role he played in their 2-1 victory over Manchester City on Saturday.
Tielemans was one of several players to have impressed for Villa in their 2-1 win over Man City on 21 December which saw them leapfrog Pep Guardiola’s side into fifth.
The Belgian international played a crucial role in Villa’s opening goal, playing a neat through ball to Morgan Rogers with Shearer hailing the impact he had on Match of the Day (21 December).
“There’s Tielemans in there, there’s no need for John Stones to go in there,” Shearer explained.
“Once he decides to go in there, he’s actually too late and then all of a sudden you’ve got one pass into Tielemans, who was superb in the game.”
Tielemans played Rogers through on goal before the England international squared it into Jhon Duran for a tap-in.

Tielemans has had an up-and-down career at Villa Park so far but his ability has always been on show even if some of his weaker performances.
However, their win against City was arguably one of his best performances in a Villa shirt and his attributes were on full show throughout the encounter.
His performance was exemplary for Villa and if he can continue to reach the heights he did on Saturday, he can play a crucial role going forward under Unai Emery and his passing ability will unlock defenders on the regular.
Much of the success Emery’s side can achieve this season will hinge on their ability to keep the Belgian fit and firing and if they can do that, they have every chance of achieving something special.
Villa sit just three points outside of the Champions League spots with an eight-point gap between Liverpool although they have played two less games.
