Aston Villa fans chant at Jack Grealish revealed in win v Manchester City

Jack Grealish was subjected to chants from the Villa Park crowd as Aston Villa beat Manchester City 2-1 on Saturday.

The 29-year-old left Villa Park in the summer of 2021, joining Man City for a British record fee of £100million at the time [The Athletic], but many feel his career has stalled in recent months.

Grealish has just six Premier League starts to his name this season, having been given the nod by Pep Guardiola, but the player may have been feeling targeted by the fans of his former team.

Reporting via BBC Sport [21 December], Nick Mashiter said: “‘You’re not super anymore,’ the Villa fans chant at Jack Grealish as their former star curls wide.”

Jack Grealish targeted by Aston Villa faithful

Grealish’s return to Villa Park was always going to be a talking point in the game, especially with so many rumours flying around about his future at the Etihad Stadium.

Bryan King has already suggested that the winger would be keen on a transfer back to his former club, especially with Unai Emery leading the team to Champions League football.

Whether the Villans would welcome him back with open arms is a completely different situation, and given the money they received for him in 2021, it seems unlikely to happen unless his price tag drops.

Villa do somewhat lack options on both flanks in the final third. Many feel that Grealish’s style has been completely stripped back and that a return would help him rediscover himself.

Jack Grealished played over 200 times for Aston Villa before signing for Manchester City.

While supporters will have been pretty delighted to rub the result in Grealish’s face, Emery will be more focused on his side getting back to winning ways after the 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest last time out.

The Villans have now moved above their opponents in the Premier League table, taking the fifth spot before the 3pm kick-offs in the division.
