Alan Shearer amazed at Jhon Duran footage in Aston Villa win v Southampton

Alan Shearer was wowed by what Aston Villa forward Jhon Duran did during the 1-0 win against Southampton.

The Colombian scored the only goal as the Villans took all three points against the relegation strugglers on Saturday (7 December) in his first Premier League start of the campaign.

The 20-year-old has scored five goals in the Premier League in just 406 minutes across 15 matches, giving him a minutes-per-goal ratio of 81.2 – the best in the league.

Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day [7 December], Shearer, who is the competition’s all-time top goalscorer, was impressed by the former Chicago Fire man.

“He was a problem all afternoon. He didn’t let them settle, the defenders,” Shearer said.

“Say what you want about the defending, the impressive thing for me about this is, he never ever gives it up.

“Look at his strength – he’s really direct, keeper comes out and makes his mind for him, but look at his strength there and his ability to run the ball. He tucks it away really well, it’s a clever finish.”

Jhon Duran gives Emery Aston Villa headache

The Colombia international has started just one Premier League match this season, making 14 appearances off the bench.

Ollie Watkins has been Unai Emery’s preferred strike option so far this campaign and that has been justified, with the Englishman scoring seven and notching three assists in 15 matches.

However, Duran has given the Spaniard a selection headache after impressing in his first start of the season.

The young star scored the only goal, created a total of 0.65xG, had five touches in the opposition box and a 100 per cent shot accuracy, hitting the target with both of his efforts. [Fotmob]

Defensively, he contributed too, winning both of the tackles he attempted, for a 100 per cent success rate.

He also made one recovery and won two out of four ground duels, showing he is also able to do dirty side of things, so to speak.

Choosing between two in-form attackers is probably the best problem for a manager to have and Emery will be ecstatic with the situation.
