Tim Sherwood shocked by Aston Villa v Southampton incident before Duran goal
Tim Sherwood has been left exasperated by Southampton’s tendency to make mistakes at the back after they almost gifted Aston Villa the lead on Saturday.
Jhon Duran put the Villans ahead in the 24th minute at Villa Park but just moments before that, John McGinn had a big chance to score after some sloppy play at the back by the Saints.
Joe Lumley’s misplaced pass in his own area was pounced upon by Boubacar Kamara before McGinn had a shot blocked.
Sherwood was clearly annoyed by seeing Southampton almost undoing all of their good work with yet another error.
“Southampton have played so well,” said Sherwood on Sky Sports News on Saturday (3:24pm, 7 December).
“They’ve had a lot of possession in Villa’s half but it goes back to Lumley, it’s a straight ball in. Kamara nicks the ball, [Villa] are winning it eight yards out.
“It falls to McGinn in the end but they manage to defend it in the end and charge it down.
“I can’t understand why they’re doing it.
“They’ve played so well in this game but they should be behind and they’re not.”
Russell Martin in big trouble at Southampton as Aston Villa go ahead
All the talk seems to be about West Ham and Wolves sacking Julen Lopetegui and Gary O’Neil respectively after their shocking midweek defeats.
But Martin seems to be escaping a lot of the attention despite he Saints’ lowly position in the Premier League.
The South Coast club came up last season via the play-offs so coming into the season, they were technically the lowest-ranked.

West Ham and Wolves aspire to be a lot more than relegation candidates but for the Saints, it was kind of expected.
Martin’s job has been made a lot harder by mistakes like this and that’s the kind of thing a manager cannot legislate for unless he’s continually starting players he shouldn’t start.
As for Aston Villa, a win against Southampton will see them continue to build momentum in what is a busy period for the club with trips to RB Leipzig and Nottingham Forest coming up in the coming days.
