Gabby Agbonlahor slams PSR after ‘Stupid’ Aston Villa developments
Gabby Agbonlahor has termed Profit and Sustainability Rules “stupid” after what happened at Aston Villa this summer.
Speaking on talkSPORT [2 December, 8:54], the former Villan lamented the Birmingham club’s situation after their 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League on 1 December.
The Lions sold some of their best players in the previous transfer window, with Douglas Luiz signing for Juventus and Moussa Diaby moving to Saudi Arabia.
Agbonlahor isn’t too pleased with the PSR as he believes they hindered Villa’s progress, saying: “How can you as a club, Aston Villa, finish in the top four, and because of the stupid PSR rules, have to sell before you buy.
“You get top four, you want to go again, you want to try and fight for top three, two, whatever. You have to sell your best player, Douglas Luiz. You have to sell Diaby.”
Aston Villa need to bounce back after Chelsea loss
The Villans can’t think about what happened in the summer, as they were coasting at the start of the campaign before hitting their recent roadblock in terms of form.
PSR has been instrumental in ensuring that clubs with wealthy owners don’t exploit other teams in the league and use their financial might to harm competitive integrity.
The Lions’ loss at Stamford Bridge was another hammer blow for them, with Unai Emery now going eight games without a win in the Villa Park dugout.
Injuries haven’t helped Villa’s cause, with Jacob Ramsey and Amadou Onana sidelined at the moment.

While the loss of Luiz and Diaby was a big blow for the Villans, they’ve made some decent additions to the squad.
It was surprising to see the Lions backing Manchester City when voting for changes to the APTs [Tom Morgan, 19 November], which sought to set strict guidelines for commercial deals.
V Sports have done well since Emery took charge of the Birmingham outfit, backing the Spaniard wherever necessary.
While PSR might aggrieve Agbonlahor, they are in place to help teams like the Villans stay competitive with the big guns in the Premier League.
In other Aston Villa news, Emery’s shocking decision with Jaden Philogene in the Chelsea loss came back to bite him.
