BBC pundit stunned by what Watkins did in Aston Villa v Juve – ‘Extraordinary’
Garry Thompson was stunned by what Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins did during their Champions League 0-0 draw with Juventus on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old forced a save from goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio in the 37th minute with a first-time shot from just inside the penalty area.
The former Brentford striker took a ball played to him at speed down with his first touch before releasing a strong effort towards the Italian side’s goal.
BBC pundit Thompson was impressed by the Englishman’s control and how he conducted himself to make the chance [BBC Radio WM, 08:36pm, 27 November], saying: “Extraordinary control by Ollie Watkins, his touch in this game, I think he has give away two balls.
“Generally, ball retention, getting the ball, get yourself on the turn, getting a shot in as well, he’s been absolutely superb.
“As a centre forward it is all about retaining the ball, get yourself in and around the box after, Ollie Watkins has been superb in that respect.”
Aston Villa need Watkins to announce himself in the Champions League
The 28-year-old has been in impressive form in the Premier League with six goals and two assists in 12 matches.
However, he has failed to score in five Champions League games but does have one assist in the competition so far.
He has maintained his place in starting XI despite Jhon Duran’s form in the competition, the Colombian forward has two goals in four matches, including a stunning volley against Bayern Munich.

However, Unai Emery has kept his trust in Watkins, starting him in four of the Villans five matches in Europe this season.
Now the striker needs to repay the favour and make a name for himself on the European stage, like he has done on the domestic scene.
