Aston Villa eye Romano Schmid transfer as concrete enquiries made

Aston Villa are interested in signing Werder midfielder Romano Schmid, according to Florian Plettenberg.

The transfer journalist posted on X [25 November] that Unai Emery’s side could look to make a deal happen in January, with “concrete enquiries” having been made after scouts were sent to check on the Austria midfielder.

The 24-year-old could be available for a little over £8million, with his contract at Werder running for another 18 months when the transfer window opens.

“Aston Villa are closely monitoring the situation of Romano Schmid!,” Plettenberg shared.

“There have already been several live scouting sessions at the stadium. Concrete inquiries for the 24-year-old attacking midfielder have been made for the winter.

“A transfer could follow by the summer at the latest. Many clubs interested. Price valuation: €10m [£8.35m]. Contract with Werder Bremen until 2026.”

Aston Villa want attacking midfielder Romano Schmid

Aston Villa have enjoyed the majority of this season with a real fluid attacking style of play under Emery.

It has picked up from where they left off last campaign, reaching the Champions League in which they have enjoyed some memorable nights.

However, recent weeks have proven difficult for the Villans, and the signing of Schmid could provide the catalyst the creative players need to sustain momentum.

Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Amadou Onana and John McGinn have all performed to excellent levels for the most part, but Schmid can offer depth in the attacking midfield area and ensure these players are looking over their shoulder with the threat of competition.

Schmid, who has 21 full caps for Austria, joined Werder Bremen in 2019 and has been a regular in the Bundesliga this term.

In other Aston Villa news, another midfielder could be on the cards, albeit at a cost of up to £30m.
