Aston Villa aligned with Man City despite Premier League bombshell
Dan Bardell believes Aston Villa backed Manchester City against the Premier League because they want to follow a similar model.
The Villans backed City in the case of new associated party transaction (APT) rules after sending a “strong recommendation” letter to Richard Masters to delay Friday’s (22 November) vote [Tom Morgan].
This didn’t prove to have the desired effect as Premier League clubs voted to approve changes to rules in a process which took under 30 minutes [BBC Sport].
Despite Villa’s opposition failing to have an impact, Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell understands why the decision to back the Citizens was made.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “Villa have been hit by the financial restrictions over the last couple of years.
“It’s really stopped them from building in the way they’ve wanted to, they’ve been forced to sell homegrown players and players who they wouldn’t want to sell.
“I think everything needs looking at.
“Villa aligning with Man City was a good thing because it shows we’re a big thinking club, we’re looking to have a similar sort of model to Manchester City so it made sense to align.“
Aston Villa and Manchester City lose case against Premier League
Villa owner Nassef Sawiris has made his thoughts against the current financial rules that are employed by the Premier League no secret.
These forced the Villans to sell Douglas Luiz to Juventus in the summer in a move that saw a key player depart despite the B6 club making preparations for a campaign in the Champions League.
This transaction among other reasons has seen the owners at Villa Park join forces with Manchester City to try and ease PSR restrictions on his side.

Although this didn’t work out in this instance, there is no doubt that the Egyptian will continue to push and oppose rules that negatively impact Villa financially and stop the club from growing upwards.
