Jhon Duran outburst no surprise with Aston Villa star in new controversy
Aston Villa star Jhon Duran didn’t hide his frustrations after a disappointing performance in Colombia’s 1-0 loss to Ecuador.
Colombian outlet Primer Tiempo posted a video on X (20 November) of Duran’s post-match interview after the defeat, in which he was a second-half substitute as Los Cafeteros slipped to a third loss in four.
Duran couldn’t make much of an impact off the bench despite Ecuador being down to 10 men for almost an hour; Piero Hincapie sent off after Enner Valencia had opened the scoring inside just seven minutes.
Asked what Colombia were “lacking” in the defeat, Duran’s reply was blunt, saying: “Why aren’t you a coach?”, to the reporter.
Jhon Duran fails to replicate Aston Villa form for Colombia
Bringing Duran off the bench with around 31 minutes left on the clock has been a sure thing for Villa this season, with just two of the striker’s eight goals coming in games in which he’s started.
Against Ecuador though, the 20-year-old’s impact was limited, firing off just two shots with one on target and being restricted to a mere 10 touches and three passes [FotMob], of which he completed all three.
Of those 10 touches, five came in Colombia’s box, but Duran was far too easy to barge off the ball, failing to complete a dribble and losing all three of his attempted ground duels at a zero per cent success rate.
Duran did complete two defensive actions and made one recovery of the ball during his cameo, but just one aerial duel won from three attempts (33 per cent – FotMob) suggested it wasn’t to be his day.
Frustrations in his post-match interview were also reflected on the pitch, with Duran committing two fouls and being booked for a needless shove on PSG defender Willian Pacho.
Unai Emery will be glad Duran came through the international break unscathed, but with his petulance rising and goals drying up, the Villa boss must find a way of rediscovering his number nine’s best form.
