John McGinn can break Scotland record as Ally McCoist gives verdict on Aston Villa star
Aston Villa skipper John McGinn showed he can prove Ally McCoist right with his goal in Scotland’s 2-1 win over Poland on Tuesday.
Speaking on talkSPORT (19 November, 6:04am), McCoist backed McGinn to eventually overtake Denis Law and Kenny Dalglish as Scotland’s top scorer, after the Villa captain moved above him into fifth place.
McGinn netted his 20th Scotland goal inside three minutes to give the visitors a perfect start in Warsaw, with captain Andy Robertson scoring a last-gasp winner after Poland equalised early in the second half.
McCoist, who has 19 international goals, said: “Kenny and Dennis are sitting on 30 goals – John’s on what, 20 now?
“I’ll tell you, you never know. John McGinn is a top, top player, delighted for him.”
Aston Villa star John McGinn 10 goals away from Scotland record
While he made his biggest impact just three minutes into the contest, McGinn was absolutely superb across 90 industrious minutes as Scotland won it at the death.
McGinn’s third-minute opener came from his only attempt on goal, a strike with just 0.12 xG behind it and resulting in a shot accuracy of 100 per cent [FotMob], all coming from a mere three touches in the box.
With the ball at his feet, McGinn completed 85 per cent of his passes and threaded six into the final third, creating goalscoring chances on three occasions and proving successful with three long ball attempts.

Though he failed to complete a single dribble and lost the ball three times, McGinn made up for this with a 100 per cent success rate from his three aerial duels despite his small frame [FotMob].
Starting on the left of midfield in a 4-2-3-1 setup, McGinn was still heavily involved at the back, putting in six defensive actions in total including three ball recoveries, two clearances and an interception.
Returning to Bodymoor Heath with two wins from two under his belt on international duty, McGinn is riding the crest of a wave at the moment – and that’s good news for Unai Emery and Villa this winter.
