Diego Carlos summer exit news shared at Aston Villa as January transfer update emerges

Aston Villa thought Diego Carlos would leave the club in the previous transfer window, according to Aston Villa News.

The news outlet was told by Graeme Bailey [15 November] that the Villans believed the defender would part ways with the Lions this summer and wouldn’t mind selling him in January for the right offer.

Unai Emery’s team wanted to sign a new centre-back, but with the Brazilian staying and due to Profit and Sustainability (PSR) rules, they couldn’t sign another player.

Diego Carlos a backup at Aston Villa

Carlos signed for Villa in the summer of 2022 after impressing at Sevilla, but an Achilles injury early on has meant that the defender has never been able to establish himself at the club.

With the arrival of Pau Torres, Emery has a quality option at his disposal, and the Spaniard has showcased his quality at Villa Park in the last few months, especially in the 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League on 2 October.

Alongside the 27-year-old, the Lions can call upon Ezri Konsa at centre-back, although the England international has also been played on the right-hand side of the defence on multiple occasions.

Carlos has seen his minutes recently, but the Brazilian didn’t do himself any favours with his performances in the losses against Club Brugge in the Champions League and Liverpool in the Premier League.

Villa started well this season but the team have had a dip in form, which has seen them drop to ninth place in the league table.

The Lions will go up against Crystal Palace after the international break on 23 November, and Emery will have a chance to get his team back on track as they fight for a place in the top four.
