Aston Villa backed over Rory Wilson decision as Arsenal comparison made
Don Goodman insists the only way Rory Wilson will get a look-in at Aston Villa is if he lets his feet do the talking.
Villa News understands that Wilson will be made to train alone by the club due to an inability to come to terms on a new contract.
The talented youngster, who arrived from Rangers in July 2022, is due to be out of contract at Villa Park next summer.
That is seen as a harsh decision by the club, but Goodman insists he would likely be involved in the first-team picture if he was doing enough to win over Unai Emery, comparing the situation to that of Ethan Nwaneri at Arsenal.
“You get into football teams on merit, no matter what the level,” Goodman told Villa News. “If you show enough you’ll make the grade.
“Just look at Ethan Nwaneri – I saw him make his debut for Arsenal when he was just 15 a couple of years ago. If you’re an extraordinary talent, the manager will deem you’re able to improve the senior squad and you’ll get your opportunity.
“But however good he is, Unai Emery clearly doesn’t deem he’s near the first-team picture. If I’m a player, I’d just want to work harder to prove my manager that I do deserve a chance, or I’d ask to leave.
“I can understand it from both aspects. Clearly Villa see him as a prospect, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be others who want to take him. If you’re a footballer, you want to play football.”
Aston Villa could yet reach Rory Wilson contract agreement
Given the youngster is free to leave at the end of the campaign, Villa are running out of time to come to an agreement with him.
Villa News understands that, while the player’s camp are unhappy with the Villans’ behaviour, an agreement in January has not been ruled out.
Wilson is clearly a very talented player and, as Goodman says, if you’re good enough then you’re old enough.

The last thing Villa want is for the 18-year-old to leave in 2025 and showcase his talents at a rival club. Let’s just hope this isn’t a case of the one that got away.
