Robin Olsen could leave Aston Villa for free in January as goalkeeper is spotted at Malmö

Bryan King has speculated that Robin Olsen could be allowed to leave Aston Villa for free in January.

The ex-Villa scout doesn’t think Unai Emery’s side would be able to secure a big fee for the 34-year-old.

As reported by Sport Bladet (11 November), Olsen was present for Malmö’s 2-1 win over IF Brommapojkarna in the Allsvenskan on Sunday (10 November), as the Swedish side celebrated their title success.

Olsen was even spotted in the Malmö changing room, as speculation continues to swirl over the Aston Villa goalkeeper potentially joining the Swedish champions.

And King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – has suggested a transfer could be agreed in January.

“I don’t think this necessarily guarantees that he is leaving,” King said.

“Olsen was sat on the bench against Liverpool. However, he was clearly free the next day. He obviously wanted to visit Malmö, and he would know a lot of people there.

“However, having said that I can certainly see something happening where he ends up leaving Villa, whether or not that is in January. Villa aren’t going to get a big fee for him anyway.

“Therefore, I’d expect something could happen in January if Malmö want it to happen, and he could even leave for free.”

Aston Villa to allow Robin Olsen to join Malmö FF on a free transfer in January?

It doesn’t seem as though Olsen has much of a future at Villa.

Therefore, letting him go in January could make a lot of sense. While King has previously suggested that Malmö could wait until the summer when Olsen’s Villa contract expires to sign him for free, Villa might be wise to allow the shot-stopper to leave for free in January.

It is clear that Emery doesn’t have any use for the shot-stopper, who is yet to make an appearance this season.

As a result, rather than continuing to pay his wages and losing him for free in the summer, Villa could just cut ties with Olsen in January and promote a brand-new goalkeeper from within.
