Warnock makes Arsenal claim after major Aston Villa controversy v Club Brugge
Stephen Warnock has compared Tyrone Mings giving away a penalty for Aston Villa against Club Brugge to a similar moment for Arsenal against Bayern Munich last season.
The Villans suffered their first defeat of the season in the Champions League away to the Belgian side on Wednesday 6 November.
The result was decided by a moment of madness from the Englishman who picked up the ball after Emi Martinez had been deemed to have taken the goal kick.
This was eerily similar to something that happened for Arsenal last season which has been picked up on by Warnock on MOTD: UEFA Champions League (7:04pm, 6 November).
He said: “Arsenal got away with doing the same thing against Bayern Munich in the Champions League last season – maybe this time the referee has seen that the Brugge players are closing Mings down?
“I want to look at it again but I don’t think Tyrone Mings has looked at Emi Martinez at all when he took the goal-kick, which is why he thinks he can pick it up because he does not know it has been taken.”
Tyrone Mings Aston Villa error v Club Brugge compared to Arsenal
Six months ago, the Gunners faced Bayern Munich at the Emirates and in a moment of controversy, David Raya passed it to Gabriel who picked the ball up before taking a goal kick.
This wasn’t given as a penalty and the game continued, much to the dismay of the Bundesliga giants and Thomas Tuchel.
Despite not being given, it is fair to say that both moments were very similar and arguably should share the same punishment from both sets of officials.
This wasn’t the case as Arsenal got away with it where the Villans and Mings were punished for the mistake which ultimately cost them the game.
Despite the controversy over whether or not this should have been given as a penalty, it has to be said that the Englishman should have the experience and nous not to touch the ball with his hands inside the box regardless of whether he thinks it is in play or not.
It is the inconsistency that will frustrate Villa fans but if they are honest with themselves, it was arguably the correct decision.
