Aston Villa ready offer to sign Pedro Goncalves as delegation jets out to Portugal
Aston Villa are “keen” on a deal to sign Sporting CP midfielder Pedro Goncalves ahead of the January transfer window, according to A Bola.
The Portuguese news outlet reported on 6 November that Aston Villa “considered making a £33.3 million offer at the end of last season” and that interest could re-surface in the coming months.
Goncalves has been a key player for Ruben Amorim who is Manchester United-bound following the sacking of Erik Ten Hag.
It is understood that Aston Villa sent a delegation to watch Goncalves as Sporting beat Manchester City 4-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Pedro Goncalves could be a gamechanger for Aston Villa
Perhaps the one thing lacking in the current Villa side is a natural midfield creator and Goncalves certainly fits that bill. Unai Emery has several midfield options but none that possess similar attributes to the Sporting man.
The 26-year-old has been a monumental figure for Sporting this season with four goals and three assists in seven league appearances. The Portuguese international registered an assist for his side in their 4-1 shock victory over Manchester City in the Champions League.

Goncalves would add a completely different dimension to the Villa team and wouldn’t significantly amplify the Villans’ chances of qualifying for the Champions League through the Premier League.
For £33.3 million, it would be an absolute steal should they be able to pull off a deal.
With the imminent departure of Amorim, Goncalves may be more open to an exit from Sporting and in particular, a return to England having been on the books of Wolves as recently as 2019.
In other Aston Villa news, Darren Anderton has brandished the club as an “absolute disgrace” for their performance in the first half against Club Brugge.
