Mings in 2/10 horror show, Martinez rare bright spark – Aston Villa player ratings v Club Brugge

Aston Villa have suffered their first Champions League defeat of the season after losing 1-0 against Club Brugge on Wednesday.

The Villans would have been keen to bounce back from their 4-1 defeat against Tottenham on Sunday (3 November) but failed to do so.

A moment of madness from Tyrone Mings saw a penalty given which the Belgian side converted to take the lead and eventually all three points.

It was a day to forget for Unai Emery’s side who have suffered their first set back in Europe’s elite competition.

Here, Villa News rates the performances of Unai Emery’s side, with statistics provided by FotMob.

Aston Villa suffer Champions League defeat v Club Brugge

Emi Martinez – 8

The Argentina international was superb for Villa and was by far the best away player on the pitch. This saw him make six saves while also maintaining a 100 per cent pass accuracy. He has every right to feel let down to be on the losing side.

Ezri Konsa- 4

It wasn’t a vintage Konsa performance but showed his quality as he was the most fouled player on the pitch after being brought down three times. Defensively he could have been better but he was far from being the worst performer.

Diego Carlos- 3

Another strange performance from the Brazilian. He has so much quality but just does strange things like smashing the ball out for a goal kick in the first half. Not really good enough.

Tyrone Mings – 2

Mings’ first Champions League game isn’t one to remember after making the most bizarre error to cap of a performance where he picked up a booking while failing to win a single tackle with a 0 per cent success rate. Just not his night.

Ian Maatsen- 4

Maatsen failed to make an impact and ultimately looks likely to be replaced by Lucas Digne once again in the Premier League. He was fast and completed the most dribbles on the pitch with two but again, it wasn’t quite his night.

Boubacar Kamara- 4

It was a positive enough return for the Frenchman after such a long time away from starting games. He won seven duels which was the most on the pitch, but ultimately wasn’t enough in the end.

Youri Tielemans- 3

It seemed that the negative response from the Brugge fans got to him and he ultimately struggled while only registering one tackle and 65 passes which he is usually better than.

Leon Bailey – 3

Another quiet night for the Jamaican who truly struggled to make his presence felt. Emery will have hoped for better from the 27-year-old who just hasn’t been good enough this season.

John McGinn- 3

In a similar breath to that of Bailey, McGinn failed to make an impact and was deservingly hooked late in the second half after a quiet performance.

Morgan Rogers- 4

Rogers can feel let down by his teammates but ultimately suffered and failed to have a positive impact. With just 79 per cent pass accuracy and a 50 per cent dribble success, Rogers had to be better.

Ollie Watkins- 4

Watkins came as close to scoring as anyone for the Villans but it still wasn’t good enough from the England international. His 33 per cent dribble success tied with a 0 per cent shot conversion rate, he is another who struggled to perform.
