Aston Villa set for financial blow as Malmö to wait for Robin Olsen transfer

Bryan King expects Malmö to wait until the summer to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen.

The ex-Villa scout thinks the Swedish outfit would be wise to avoid signing the goalkeeper in January.

According to a report via Expressen (28 October), Aston Villa and Malmö have held concrete talks over a January transfer for Olsen, despite the goalkeeper’s contract at Villa Park expiring next summer.

However, King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – doesn’t think a winter transfer makes much sense.

“Perhaps it is time for Olsen to go home,” King said.

“He’s been playing for big clubs in Europe, he’s well into his thirties, he must be financially sound.

“It looks as though Malmö are going to win the league, which would mean UEFA Champions League next year. However, I think they will wait until the summer to sign Olsen.

“He wouldn’t be playing in the league until March or April time anyway. If he goes in the summer, it will be money to Olsen and nothing to Villa.

“Therefore, I think it would be more beneficial for Malmö to wait until the summer. They’re going to win the league this year. It is sensible for Malmö to wait.”

Malmö to avoid signing Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen in January?

Unless Malmö are trying to fend off interest from another club, it doesn’t make any sense for them to sign Olsen in January.

They could simply agree on a pre-contract with the shot-stopper which would see them avoid paying a fee to Villa.

Olsen has already been backed to return to the club he spent two spells with previously.

However, the Allsvenskan season begins in late March and runs through until November. Therefore, Malmö could easily afford to wait until July for Olsen to join, as if he does arrive in January, there wouldn’t be too much for him to do for his first few months at the club.

As for Unai Emery and Villa, it seems as though they’re happy for the goalkeeper to leave.

However, they will no doubt want some sort of fee in return and will be pushing for a January sale.
