Alan Smith blown away by ‘Glorious’ Lucas Digne moment in first half of Tottenham vs Aston Villa

Alan Smith was blown away by a Lucas Digne cross that almost led to an opening goal for Aston Villa in their Premier League contest at Tottenham on Sunday.

The full-back burst down the left wing, managed to get away from Brennan Johnson and then released a near-perfect cross just on the edge of the box but, unfortunately, Ollie Watkins couldn’t quite get there.

The Villans were leading 1-0 at the break after a solid header from Morgan Rogers set the two teams apart at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but they almost made an even faster start.

Speaking live on Sky Sports Main Event (3 November, 14:04pm), Alan Smith shared his verdict on Villa’s first chance of the game.

“I’m not sure if Dragusin did enough but I thought Watkins had the run on him,” he said. “It was a glorious ball in and he just misses it.”

Aston Villa need to come away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a win

Villa weren’t always at their best in the opening period but Digne, whose corner led to the opening goal, has been heavily involved.

Unai Emery will no doubt be looking for his team to keep up this level of form after a fairly poor showing against Crystal Palace where they were beaten 2-1 in the Carabao Cup on 30 October.

Players such as Rogers and Jhon Duran have often been the stars of the show but as both of them play in similar positions, the Spaniard has had a rather difficult decision to make each matchday with Rogers seemingly getting the nod against Ange Postecoglou’s men on Sunday (3 November).

If things stay as they are, a win could send them up to third and further cement their chances of earning one of the Premier League’s top-four spots at the end of the season.

We’re still only halfway through the game of course but as long as Digne and his teammates keep up this level of performance throughout the clash, it’s hard to see how they won’t come away with all three points.
