Tyrone Mings bellowed at Aston Villa teammate v Crystal Palace – here’s why

Tyrone Mings was seen screaming at Joe Gauci after the Aston Villa goalkeeper hesitated when coming to collect a ball in the EFL Cup tie against Crystal Palace.

Mings’ return was a welcomed one as he made his first start for the club in 445 days following a long-term knee injury as Villa suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Eagles to exit in round four.

The defender impressed against Palace, though, and immediately showcased his leadership qualities, screaming at ‘keeper Gauci after what he did, something which the Athletic journalist Jacob Tanswell picked up on.

In a post on his X account (30 October), Tanswell wrote: “An excellent sliding tackle from Tyrone Mings. Sprints back after a long ball over the top and gets the ball before Schlupp. In true Mings fashion, he bellows at Joe Gauci for not coming out to sweep. That tested every part of Mings’ physique/condition.”

Tyrone Mings return is a huge boost for Aston Villa

Mings has consistently showcased his ability as a top-level Premier League defender but questions were raised about how he would fare on his return after over a year out with injury.

The answer? Very, very well. His experience is evident every time he steps on the pitch and he can play a crucial role for Unai Emery’s side this season.

Diego Carlos, Ezri Konsa and Pau Torres have all stepped up for Villa when required but none have the significant leadership abilities that Mings possesses.

His return can only be a positive as the club look to build on what has been a brilliant start to the campaign in both European and domestic competitions.

While he may not feature regularly in the Premier League under Emery straight away, having the added option of his inclusion can only be seen as a positive and his performance against Palace could cause a selection headache for the Spaniard.

In other Aston Villa news, Prince William’s attendance at Aston Villa matches this season will have given the Villans a “global” exposure boost, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.
