Paul Scholes fires new jibe at Aston Villa after Unai Emery to Manchester United admission

Paul Scholes has fired a fresh jibe at Aston Villa after previously suggesting Unai Emery would leave Villa Park for Manchester United.

The Red Devils have parted ways with Erik ten Hag following their disappointing defeat to West Ham United and Scholes was quick to suggest Emery would “walk to Manchester” if he were offered the job [talkSPORT, 28 October].

While United look set to appoint Ruben Amorim as their new manager [Fabrizio Romano, 29 October], Scholes has doubled down on his statement and fired a new dig at one Villa fan who suggested Emery would rather stay at Villa Park.

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate (30 October, 13:50) Jamie Carragher said: “Is there any feeling or worry, why would Manchester United not try and entice him?”

Dave, the Villa fan replied: “I heard Paul say Emery would walk there, I think he’d run away from there, to be honest.”

Scholes laughing responded: “Had a good year have you?”

Would Unai Emery exit Aston Villa and Villa Park amid Manchester United links?

There is absolutely no reason for pundits like Scholes to suggest that Emery would be at all interested in jumping ship at Villa Park.

Time after time, the former Arsenal manager has demonstrated his commitment to the Villans. He has been linked with some of the biggest jobs in world football, but never once pushed for a move.

The project that the Spanish manager is building at Villa Park is only heading in one direction and by signing a contract extension last season, Emery has demonstrated his desire to stand by that project for the foreseeable future.

Of course, the Manchester United job is a massive opportunity and would need to be considered, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it would be an easy decision for Emery to make the move to Old Trafford.

Scholes hasn’t suggested that Ange Postecoglou would be open to leaving Spurs for United, or Arne Slot would be open to leaving Liverpool, or Enzo Maresca would be willing to exit Chelsea. Villa and Emery should be treated with the same respect.
