Aston Villa open to Robin Olsen sale as Malmo eye January transfer
Aston Villa are open to selling Robin Olsen amid concrete talks with Malmo over a January transfer, according to Expressen.
The Swedish news outlet reported on Monday [28 October] that the clubs are seeking an agreement to sanction a move in the winter transfer window despite the goalkeeper’s contract at Villa Park expiring at the end of the season.
Malmo wishes to bring Olsen back to his former club, with the Allsvenskan side struggling in the Europa League after losing two out of their opening three fixtures.
Aston Villa are prepared to allow Robin Olsen to leave the club
The 34-year-old has featured 17 times since he arrived at Aston Villa from Roma in 2022, spending his time as number two behind Emi Martinez.
Olsen has yet to sport the famous claret and blue this season, and it may be he never gets the opportunity to do so again with a return to his native Sweden looking all the more likely.
A move represents great business for all parties: Aston Villa get to remove a player from the wage books who will never be first choice under Unai Emery, and Olsen gets to return to his homeland and help the side who nurtured his youth career all while competing in European football.
Emi Martinez is in the conversation with the best goalkeepers in the world – few could displace him between the sticks at Villa Park, never mind a player who played only five times last term.

However, the possibility of other sides entering the frame for his signature has not yet been ruled out and Malmo could face a fight to secure the signing of the number two at Aston Villa.
This would be the dream scenario for Villa. Olsen’s departure looks more like an inevitability than a possibility, and replacing him will surely prove no hard task for Emery.
