Morgan Rogers 3/10 flop, Lucas Digne superb in 8/10 – Aston Villa player ratings v Bournemouth

Aston Villa suffered heartbreak after a late equaliser saw Bournemouth hold them to a 1-1 draw at Villa Park on Saturday (26 October).

John McGinn thought he had opened the scoring for the Villans in the 28th minute as he did against Bologna on Tuesday (22 October), but saw the goal contentiously disallowed after VAR determined the ball had gone out before Ollie Watkins set him up.

Unai Emery’s side, though, continued to push and eventually got their reward with 14 minutes to go until full-time, with substitute Ross Barkley putting them in front.

Aston Villa appeared to be on their way to registering their sixth league win of the season, but a dramatic equaliser from Evanilson six minutes into added time saw the Cherries claim a point.

Here, Villa News rates the Villans players out of 10 after the win, with the help of FotMob stats.

Emi Martinez – 5

Dibu’ was untested between the sticks for most of the game, with Bournemouth registering just two shots on target until their equaliser at the end, which he could not have done much about. He claimed the ball from the air twice and made eight recoveries while completing 36 of his 47 passes.

Matty Cash – 6

Cash had 54 touches of the ball and was not dispossessed once. He completed 30 passes, including two long ones, with 88 per cent accuracy, creating one chance in the process. The Poland international won five of nine duels attempted and won one of his two tackles. He also made four recoveries, two clearances and one interception and block each. He was booked for a foul on Antoine Semenyo towards the end.

Ezri Konsa – 8

Konsa was handed his first Premier League start in three games and did not disappoint, winning all five of his duels and not committing a single foul. He made two clearances and recoveries each, as well as an interception. Seven of his 57 accurate passes were played into the final third. The defender also had a shot on target and created a chance.

Pau Torres – 5

Torres made three clearances and four recoveries, while winning three of his seven duels. The Spaniard completed 33 passes with 92 per cent accuracy and had two touches in the box.

Lucas Digne [Off for Ian Maatsen 71′] – 8

Digne was involved at both ends of the pitch until he was replaced in the second half. In attack, he completed 23 of his 26 passes with 88 per cent accuracy and created two chances, registering an xA of 0.41. At the back, he won one of his tackles and made three interceptions and recoveries each. The former Barcelona man won three of his six ground duels, including two of his three attempts in the air. He was booked for a late challenge on Dango Ouattara in the 58th minute.

John McGinn [Off for Leon Bailey 71′] – 4

McGinn was unlucky to see his goal ruled out in the first half but otherwise had an average game. The Scot only completed 13 passes with 81 per cent accuracy, with only one of them going into the final third. Although he recovered the ball on four occasions, he lost it two times and was dribbled past once. The captain also lost (5) more duels than he won (3). He was booked for a foul on Milos Kerkez in midfield in the 55th minute.

Amadou Onana [Off for Ross Barkey 46′] – 4

Onana was taken off at half-time for the third this season after he picked up a yellow card for a foul on Enes Unaljust four minutes into the game. He won only one of his four duels and was largely ineffective in defence, making just two recoveries. The Belgium international could have also done better in attack as he missed one big chance with 0.69 xGOT. His point was on point, though, as he completed 28 passes, including seven into the final third, with 90 per cent accuracy.

Youri Tielemans – 6

Tielemans was heavily involved in the game, registering 91 touches. He had one shot on target and had three others blocked while creating two chances. 13 of his 53 accurate passes were played into the final third. He won three of his seven duels, but none in the air. The Belgian had a total of six defensive actions. He was booked for a lunging tackle on Ryan Christie in the 18th minute.

Jacob Ramsey – 5

Ramsey was one of seven Aston Villa players to be booked on the afternoon. Five of his 49 touches came in the opposition half, while he also completed the only dribble he attempted. He made five recoveries, two interceptions and a block.

Morgan Rogers flops for Aston Villa

Morgan Rogers [Off for Jhon Duran 57′] – 3

Rogers has been one of Villa’s best players this season, but not against Bournemouth. He was restricted to just 17 touches and lost the ball four times despite being largely uninvolved. The Englishman lost seven of his eight duels (12.5 per cent success) and lost the only tackle he attempted. One chance-creating pass was his only contribution.

Ollie Watkins [Off for Boubacar Kamar 82′] – 7

Watkins may not have contributed a goal or assist, but his involvement in the leadup to Barkey’s goal cannot be disregarded. The Englishman did extremely well to open up space in the Bournemouth box before passing the ball to Maatsen, whose cross was then met by Bailey to assist Barkley. He got both of his shots on target and created as many chances. The 28-year-old registered 24 touches, of which 10 were in the opposition box. He won five of his ten duels and registered a 100 per cent record in the air.

Substitutions

Ross Barkley – 5

Making his second league start for Aston Villa, Barkley had a mixed game as he first thought he had netted the winner for the side. However, he then gave away the free-kick that led to Evanilson’s goal. Although he recovered the ball thrice, he lost both his duels.

Jhon Duran – 5

Having built a reputation as a super-sub, he attempted to make a difference off the bench, taking three shots – of which only one hit the target. He won seven duels, including three in the air, despite being on the pitch for only 33 minutes. The Colombian should have done better to deny Evanilson having a free header for his goal.

Ian Maatsen – N/A

Leon Bailey – N/A
