Aston Villa already secure eight-figure windfall after Champions League update at Villa Park

Aston Villa will have already secured an eight-figure windfall from their impressive start to the Champions League campaign, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.

Unai Emery’s Villans stretched their winning run in Europe’s premier competition to three matches with a 2-0 victory over Bologna on Tuesday (22 October) thanks to second-half goals from John McGinn and Jhon Duran.

Although Villa are yet to confirm their place in the competition’s knockout stages, Plumley insists that from prize money, ticket revenue and participation fees alone Emery’s side will have pocketed upwards of £20million.

“It’s already a fairly decent amount,” Plumley exclusively told Villa News.

“Take out the €18.6million [£15.5million]that is the participation fee in the group stage, that’s already secured.

“Then if you look at the three games, with two of them being at home, they will have picked up €6.3million [£5.2million] from win bonuses already as it’s €2.1million [£1.7million] per win and they’ve got three on the bounce from their amazing start.

“From a matchday point of view, they tend to generate about £1million per matchday at Aston Villa so conservatively, that’s an extra £2million in additional games.

How much do Aston Villa earn for playing Champions League football at Villa Park?

“We know that they’ve squeezed their ticket prices up as well so it could even be a little bit higher than that.

“When you put it together in terms of wins and the two extra games, you’re getting close to a figure of an extra €9million [£7.5million] there of just those three matches alone.

“So it’s not only great for the fans to watch on the pitch but it’s a nice little boost to the finances as well.”

Without accounting for TV revenue on top of the above figures, the Villans will have already earned somewhere in the region of £23million for their three-match winning run in the Champions League.

With the January transfer window looming around the corner and PSR concerns taking the Premier League by storm, that sort of early season boost can only be a good thing for Emery and his side this term.
