Jhon Duran problem emerges with Aston Villa teammate after Villa Park incident
Stan Collymore has mooted a potential problem between Jhon Duran and Aston Villa teammate Ollie Watkins after an incident at Villa Park.
The 20-year-old once again managed to get on the scoresheet as the Villans ran out 2-0 winners over Bologna on Tuesday (22 October) to move top of the new-look Champions League group stage.
However, Duran was spotted reacting angrily when he was replaced by Watkins in the second half and talkSPORT pundit Collymore has suggested that could cause a problem between the two forwards at Villa Park.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Wednesday (23 October, 13:25) he said: “I didn’t like the fact that he came off of the pitch, kicking chairs and throwing his toys out the pram.
“Everyone laughs it off as well you’ve won and he’s scoring goals, it doesn’t matter. It will matter down the line when Villa lose games and he does that because players like Ollie Watkins who do behave themselves and do put themselves on the line week in and week out will be thinking he’s getting away with things here that I’m not.
“That has to be very carefully managed.”
What did Jhon Duran do after Aston Villa Champions League in at Villa Park?
It hasn’t been easy for Emery to manage both Duran and Watkins so far this season. While the England international more than earned his starting place with his performances last summer, he hasn’t reached the same heights so far this term.
On the other hand, Duran has gone from strength to strength in claret and blue and shown that he can perform on the biggest stage, hence why Emery decided to start him against Bologna on Tuesday night.
But the 20-year-old’s reaction after he was substituted isn’t acceptable. While every player is normally disappointed to be hooked by their manager, there is a time and a place for that sort of reaction.
As Collymore suggests, what sort of message does that send not only to Watkins but other players in Emery’s side? Should that sort of attitude be rewarded, or should it be punished?
Ultimately, this is not the first time Duran’s antics off or on the pitch have got the striker in hot water and it is unlikely to be the last time it happens either.
