Morgan Rogers avoids ‘absolutely stupid’ situation as Aston Villa star proves pundit wrong
Don Goodman says it is “just a matter of time” before Aston Villa ace Morgan Rogers is called up to the England senior squad.
Rogers was once again named in the England Under-21s side this month and played in the wins over Ukraine and Azerbaijan.
Unai Emery admitted earlier in the season he was “surprised” the 22-year-old was still being selected for England at age-grade level, arguing he gets no benefits out of it.
Goodman can see Rogers making the step up on the international scene before long, but raised a problem he will then have to overcome.
Asked if linking up with the Under-21s is a show of Rogers’ character, Sky Sports pundit Goodman told Villa News: “It smacks of the attitude of a man who knows he’s on the cusp of getting in the senior squad. So it would be absolutely stupid not to turn up for the Under-21s.
“He’s done the right thing in showing the right attitude. As I’ve said before, I wasn’t sure he was Premier League-ready when he joined and I’ve held my hands up. He’s got there a lot quicker than I ever imagined.
“He’s growing his reputation but his big problem is the number of talented players in that area of the pitch for England. But if he keeps producing week in, week out for Aston Villa, it’s just a matter of time.”
Morgan Rogers ready to make step up to England senior side
Rogers has impressed consistently in the Premier League and also now the Champions League, which is not the case for a number of senior England players.
As Emery recently said, it seems silly that the talented attacker is being selected for the U21s, but Rogers continues to turn up and continues to catch the eye.

England do indeed have a number of talented players in attacking midfield, but that is not to say there is not a place for Rogers in the side.
With two more fixtures to come next month, before Thomas Tuchel takes charge at the start of 2025, it may well be that Rogers gets his big chance very soon indeed.
