Joe Gauci damages Aston Villa chances after what he did for Australia

Joe Guaci has harmed his chances of featuring more for Aston Villa after his performance in Australia’s 1-1 draw against Japan on 15 October.

The Socceroos were able to secure a point in their World Cup qualification group away in Saitama as two own goals settled the game.

The Villa number two keeper started in between the sticks for Tony Popovic’s side and will have been frustrated to have conceded a late leveller.

Unai Emery will have been left concerned by certain elements of his performance which will damage his chance of more regular minutes in B6.

The former Adelaide United keeper has had to be patient in his time with the Villans which has seen him make just one competitive appearance.

This came against Wycombe Wanderers in the EFL Cup and with more cup clashes coming up, the 24-year-old would be hopeful of starting in those.

Gauci may have dealt his chances a blow with his poor performance on the ball against Japan which is likely to frustrate Emery.

After being afforded 42 touches on the ball, the Aussie could only complete 19 passes with a 56 per cent accuracy [FotMob], which just is not good enough.

His long ball success rate was also poor, completing just three out of 18 attempts with a 17 per cent ratio.

This has to be compared to Emi Martinez who is a stellar example of a top goalkeeper who has come on leaps and bounds under Emery at Villa Park.

In the clash against Bayern Munich, the Argentina international put in a Man of the Match performance and kept up a long pass accuracy of 33 per cent as he searched out Ollie Watkins up front [FotMob].

This nearly doubles the Australian’s output which almost sums up how far behind the Villa number two is to the world’s number one.

With that being said, there were still some positive aspects to the shot-stopper’s performance as he did make three saves while also completing one punch and one high claim.

Despite this, Emery will want to get the keeper back to Bodymoor Heath to work on his ability with the ball at his feet as it is a huge part of his tactical approach in B6.
