Troy Deeney stunned as Unai Emery backed to exit Aston Villa with Manchester United move mooted

Troy Deeney has been left stunned after Alex Crook suggested Unai Emery would be willing to leave Aston Villa to take over Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag has once again come under pressure at Old Trafford after a poor start to the season with the Red Devils which has seen them win just two of their opening seven Premier League matches.

While the Dutchman is yet to be sacked by the United hierarchy, speculation has already emerged around his potential successor and talkSPORT journalist Crook has suggested Emery would be keen to take on the role.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Friday (11 October) Crook said: “There are three managers who turn down Manchester United and they are [Mikel] Arteta, [Pep] Guardiola and [Arne] Slot.

“Everybody else would take the job and I include Unai Emery in that. It’s Manchester United.”

Deeney who was left shocked replied: “Ok, I disagree. I don’t think it’s the Man United role that it was.”

Crook hit back saying: “Imagine being that guy who brings the glory days back.”

Deeney responded: “But imagine not.”

Would Unai Emery exit Aston Villa for Manchester United and Old Trafford?

While Crook’s suggestion that the Manchester United job is always an attractive opportunity for a manager is correct, it is hard to see how it would be more enticing for Emery than continuing at Villa Park.

The Spaniard has been a revelation during his time with the Villans they are only continuing to improve under his management. He has already had plenty of success, but there is still so much more that could be achieved at Villa.

Having only put pen to paper on a new contract in the summer, it would certainly be a surprise to see the former Arsenal boss pushing for the exit door.

While exit clauses exist in most deals, you’d imagine he would have been reluctant to sign an extension if he was planning to head to Old Trafford or any other club anytime soon.

Perhaps the most worrying thing about this entire argument will be the fact that a lot of Villa fans will find themselves agreeing with Deeney. It isn’t often that he sides with the Villans but he has got this one spot on.
