Aston Villa drive up Jhon Duran market value with ‘Smart’ decision at Villa Park
Aston Villa will have driven up Jhon Duran’s market value with a “smart” contract decision, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.
The Colombian’s excellent start to the season, which has seen him score four Premier League goals in just 184 minutes of action, has been rewarded with a new deal at Villa Park to extend his stay until 2030 [Sky Sports, 7 October].
Although it is unclear whether Duran’s new deal will have ended the interest in his signature, Plumley has been quick to heap praise on the Villans for getting their major contract business done at this stage of the campaign.
“I think it’s a smart move,” Plumley exclusively told Villa News.
“We’ve spoken about it with other clubs and different examples, a lot of teams are doing internal business fairly quickly and tieing players down.
“Particularly when the club is in a good run of form and the player’s in a good run of form.
“It is likely that the form and status of the contract will always drive a player’s market valuation to some degree.
“So for me, it is a sensible move to tie players down early to new contracts and more and more clubs seem to be getting pretty savvy at doing that nowadays in their internal business operations as well.”
Will Jhon Duran exit Aston Villa after new Villa Park contract developments?
Duran was very publically linked with a move away from Villa Park throughout the summer transfer window, with reports suggesting West Ham United had multiple offers rejected for the striker [Fabrizio Romano, 25 July].

While the Hammers were not alone in their desire to sign the Colombian forward, Villa’s decision to extend his contract until 2030 will have likely priced all but a handful of clubs out of a future move.
Having established themselves as a top-four competitor in the Premier League, Unai Emery and the club’s hierarchy will likely be keen to tie down their other top players to new deals.
Doing this should help Aston Villa avoid the prospect of members of the Big Six poaching some of the best talent at Villa Park.
