Aston Villa ‘missed opportunity’ mooted v Manchester United amid Jonny Evans development
Dan Bardell believes Aston Villa missed an opportunity to beat Manchester United after failing to breach Jonny Evans in defence.
The Northern Ireland international was awarded the man of the match award at Villa Park on Sunday 6 October, summing up the lack of attacking potency throughout.
The Villans were unable to take their chances with Bruno Fernandes being the closest to scoring as he hit the crossbar from a second half free kick.
Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell thinks that Evans getting the award sums up Villa’s performance against a struggling side.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “For where Villa are and where they are going and for where United are and where I think they will end up, I can’t help but look at the game as a missed opportunity.
“Villa are a top outfit, United are not, so I wanted us to get that defensive pairing, but it wasn’t to be.
“We didn’t ask enough questions of them, and Evans getting MOTM reflects that.“
Aston Villa struggle going forward v Manchester United
It says a lot that after beating Bayern Munich, Villa weren’t able to get any purchase out of Evans or Harry Maguire throughout the clash in B6.
This saw the likes of Ollie Watkins and even the seemingly inevitable Jhon Duran struggle to make a positive impact going forward.
This was frustrating to the Villa faithful who expected more from their side against an under-pressure Erik ten Hag.
There is potential that there was a lack of energy after the intense nature of the Bayern Munich clash which certainly played a part.

At the end of the day, a point is better than none and the Villans have done worse against Manchester United over the years.
