Diego Carlos must follow Lucas Digne example at Aston Villa with solution needed

Dan Bardell has urged Diego Carlos to follow in Lucas Digne’s footsteps as Unai Emery searches for a defensive solution at Aston Villa.

The Brazilian struggled against Ipswich Town and was turned inside out as Rory Delap grabbed an equaliser to seal a 2-2 draw on Sunday 29 September.

The Brazilian did look much improved in the amazing 1-0 win against Bayern Munich on Wednesday 2 October, keeping his place with Matty Cash out injured.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell believes the centre-back could use his teammate Digne as an example to bounce back after a poor run of form.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “Emery is obviously searching for a solution to Matty Cash being out, and has tried a few different things and the defence hasn’t really ever felt right.

I think Carlos had good and bad games last season, this season he is visibly struggling.

It won’t have helped that he knows he was available to other clubs in the summer and that Villa would have moved him on if possible to get someone else in.

Carlos should look to Lucas Digne as an example. He has proved people wrong and cemented himself in the squad and in the main the team, despite being in a similar position to Carlos.

Undoubtedly, the left back found himself in a tough patch when Emery came in as Alex Moreno became a regular starter.

The former Everton man never let this affect him and has returned to the starting XI and now has become a France international once again.

Carlos could certainly use this bounce back to form as something to aim for after a difficult time against Ipswich and Wolves.

The difficulty is that if the ex-Sevilla man features it is often at the expense of Ezri Konsa who is then forced out to right back.

Emery has to find a solution that works for everyone and helps add to the defensive solidity at Villa Park moving forward.
