Emiliano Martínez must improve after what Aston Villa star did in draw v Ipswich Town

Bryan King claims Emiliano Martínez was at fault for Ipswich Town’s opener in the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa at Portman Road on Sunday (29 September).

The ex-Villa scout wants to see the 32-year-old “tighten up his game” after his mistake against Kieran McKenna’s side.

Liam Delap scored twice for the hosts, capitalising on a baffling Unai Emery selection decision.

However, King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – feels it was Martínez at fault for the opener.

“You never like to see your goalkeeper get beat at the near post,” King said.

“When that does happen, there are question marks around the goalkeeper. Therefore, if a player of that quality gets beat there, you have to say it shouldn’t have gone in.

“That is where you want the player to shoot, if he shoots across the goal and it goes in, then the attacker has done well. However, Martínez showed him the gap and didn’t save it. He needs to tighten up his game.”

It hasn’t been the greatest of weeks for Martínez.

In addition to his mistake and the poor result for Villa at Portman Road, the shot-stopper has been banned for Argentina’s next two matches by FIFA (via Daily Mail, 28 September).

As a result, he will be keen to bounce back. Luckily, he has the perfect chance to do that as Emery’s side welcome Bayern Munich to Villa Park in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday (2 October).

Martínez came up with a big save from Kalvin Phillips’ strike against Ipswich Town, reminding everyone that even when he makes mistakes, he is still a top goalkeeper.

Therefore, if anyone can be trusted to bounce back, it is Martínez.
