Aston Villa in line for eight-figure windfall after brand new developments

Aston Villa will be in line for a £10million-plus windfall if they reach the round of 16 in the Champions League, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.

Unai Emery’s side got their European campaign off to the perfect start with a 3-0 win over Young Boys in Switzerland to climb to fourth in the new-look league stage of Europe’s premier competition.

That win alone will have pocketed the Villans £2.1million, but Plumley admits that Emery’s side could earn a low eight-figure fee if they can book their place in the next round of the competition.

“This is where you can really start to generate some money,” Plumley exclusively told Villa News.

“They’ve already banked £2.1million for the win over Young Boys. That’s the bonus for a win in the league phase, so there’s already that in the bank.

“It’s then if you can make the Last 16 where it really starts to generate a return. You get a £1million if you make the knockout round, so finishing between ninth and 24th puts you in this knockout round.

“But if you can get into the last 16, that jumps to £11million in prize money.

“If you finish top eight you get an extra £2million, if you finish between ninth and 16th, you get an extra £1million.

“So the big jump of around £10million-plus is if you can finish in the top 24, get out of that knockout round and get into the last 16.”

How much do Aston Villa earn from the Champions League at Villa Park?

Qualifying for the Champions League was a massive footballing achievement for Emery and his Villa side on the whole, but it may well have been just as important from a financial standpoint.

While £10million isn’t a life-changing amount of money in the modern footballing world, it could well prove to be crucial as Villa look to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules this term.

If Emery’s side can book their place in the Champions League round of 16 this term, the eight-figure windfall may well be enough to ensure that they don’t have to sell another big-name star like Douglas Luiz this term.

Hopefully, the Villans will maintain their good form in the group stage and book their place in the next round this season.
