Joe Gauci cements Aston Villa role despite what he did v Wycombe Wanderers

Ty Bracey believes Joe Gauci is now number two at Aston Villa despite some shaky moments on his debut against Wycombe Wanderers.

The Aussie made his first competitive start for the Villans on Tuesday 24 September and was very unfortunate not to keep a clean sheet after a late goal.

Despite this, Unai Emery’s side made it through to the fourth round of the EFL Cup thanks to goals from Emi Buendia and Jhon Duran.

Villa podcaster, who features on the Villa Social, Bracey now thinks the 24-year-old has displaced Robin Olsen as the number two goalkeeper in B6 after his performance.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bracey said: “He had some moments that people will cling on to.

Moments where he misplaced a pass and it ended up going out of place or what not but in terms of shot stopping I thought he was bang on.

I had no qualms with his performance in terms of saves, I thought he was really good. His mistakes could just be down to nerves.

I’d say he’s the number two at Villa now.

Joe Gauci shines on Aston Villa debut v Wycombe

The former Adelaide United star has finally made his first appearance for Villa despite joining the club towards the end of the last January transfer window.

Despite having to wait upwards of seven months to make his debut, Gauci looked sharp and made a host of positive saves throughout the clash at Adams Park.

He made five saves throughout and was arguably let down by Lamare Bogarde and Sil Swinkels in front of him for Richard Kone’s late goal.

With plenty more fixtures coming in the Champions League, EFL Cup and FA Cup, there will be opportunities for the shot stopper to impress Emery further.

This could see Olsen relegated to third choice at Villa Park which is likely to be news well received by supporters.
