Aston Villa fans annihilate Sil Swinkels despite win v Wycombe – ‘Farewell’, ‘Shocking’
Aston Villa fans slammed Sil Swinkels after the 20-year-old made his full competitive debut in the 2-1 win over Wycombe on Tuesday night.
Although the Villans progressed to the next round of the Carabao Cup with a win in Buckinghamshire, the performance of Unai Emery’s second string was less than impressive.
Emi Buendia’s goalscoring return to the starting line-up after a year out injured was obviously a huge plus but a failure to see off a League One team with any ease has become a bit of a cause for concern.
Dutch youngster Swinkels was drafted into Emery’s defence with the centre-back playing all 90 minutes for the first time in first-team football after spending much of last season sidelined with a serious knee injury.
Sil Swinkels at fault for Wycombe late goal v Aston Villa
While the stats show that only Lamare Bogade (86) completed more passes than Swinkels (77) in the Carabao Cup game with the ex-Vitesse player also completing six clearances and making one interception [WhoScored], he was easily at fault for Wycombe’s late goal through Richard Kone.
Only seconds split Kone’s goal and the full-time whistle but had it had been longer, there’d have no doubt been some squeaky bums on the Villa bench and in the away end at Adams Park.
Aston Villa fans weren’t exactly kind to the young Dutchman after the game, with one saying “farewell” to him, suggesting that’s him finished in Emery’s first-team plans.
