Unai Emery makes Ezri Konsa mistake in confirmed Aston Villa XI v Wycombe Wanderers
Unai Emery has named his Aston Villa starting XI for the EFL Cup clash against Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday 24 September.
The Villans will be looking to keep up their recent run of good form after securing yet another comeback victory against Wolves on Saturday (21 September).
They face a Chairboys side who will be keen to secure a scalp against a Premier League side after a positive start to their campaign in League One.
Villa have confirmed their starting lineup via the club’s official X account (24 September), leaving supporters disappointed not to see Ezri Konsa starting.
Ezri Konsa misses out for Aston Villa against Wycombe Wanderers
The England international grabbed his first goal of the season last time out against Wolves it is a surprise to see him miss out in the cup.
Emery has opted to start Lamare Bogarde and Sil Swinkels in the heart of defence which could leave the Villans exposed given their inexperience.
Konsa provides a calm head at the back which saw him have 69 touches and complete 56 passes with a 97 per cent accuracy against Gary O’Neil’s side [FotMob].
The 26-year-old is superb defensively which saw him win 100 per cent of his tackles in his two attempts.
This isn’t where his influence at the back ended at Villa Park as he also made one clearance and interception while also making five recoveries.
The former Brentford star won five duels with a 71 per cent win rate so would have been perfect to face Wycombe away from home.
The youthful look to the Villa defence chosen by Emery could prove to be a risk and could certainly benefit from the coolness and experience of Konsa.
