Emi Buendia in 8/10 masterclass, Ian Maatsen has stinker – Aston Villa player ratings v Wycombe

Aston Villa are through to the fourth round of the EFL Cup after a hard fought 2-1 win against Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday 24 September.

It was a difficult first half for the Villans which saw the home side have the better of the chances despite not being able to make them count.

Emi Buendia made the Chairboys rue their missed chances just 10 minutes after the interval as his looping header found the back of the net.

Jhon Duran secured the result for the away side after he won a penalty and dispatched it to make it 2-0 and take the game away from Wycombe.

Richard Kone did bring one back for the hosts, lashing the ball past Joe Guaci, but it was too little too late.

Here’s how Villa News rated each player out of 10 in Berne, with all stats from FotMob.

Joe Guaci – 7

The 24-year-old made his first competitive start for the club in the clash at Adams Park and was largely impressive. There were a few shaky moments for the keeper but with a 87 per cent pass accuracy and four saves, the Australian had a positive evening.

Kosta Nedeljkovic – 4

Nedeljkovic will have been desperate to impress Emery after missing out on the last three games. The Serbian couldn’t really make his chance count with just 69 touches and won just one tackle throughout the clash against League One opposition.

Lamare Bogarde – 6

Another game, another position for Bogarde who has started Premier League games at right back in recent weeks. The 20-year-old started at centre back this time out and was positive with 86 passes with a 91 per cent pass accuracy. An established performance from the versatile youngster.

Sil Swinkels – 5

Another youngster in the backline for the Villans and another who impressed. The Dutchman’s passing was also on point with an 88 per cent accuracy while also making five clearances throughout. There was a lot to like about Swinkels’ performance in his first true senior appearance but he will have been disappointed to have conceded in the way he did.

Ian Maatsen – 4

Like Nedeljkovic, this was a chance for the Dutch international to impose himself on the first team after starting the campaign as second fiddle to Lucas Digne. The 22-year-old failed to complete a cross and won none of his four attempted duels. Maatsen could have been worse but could have been a whole lot better.

Ross Barkley – 5

This should have been a game for the 30-year-old to impose himself in the heart of midfield. The ex-Luton Town man created two chances but generally struggled up against the Wycombe press. 83 touches and 66 passes was positive but Barkley may have expected better.

Amadou Onana – 5

Another one who may have expected more of his own showing is Onana. The Belgium international managed to register 60 touches before being taken off but had little forward impact. It made sense to take him off after featuring in the Premier League at the weekend to give him some well-deserved rest.

Kadan Young – 6

Just days after signing a new long term contract at the club, Young made his debut and made a positive showing despite a frustrating night overall. The 18-year-old had a large part to play in the opening goal to cap off a good night’s work.

Leon Bailey – 6

It wasn’t much of a night to remember for the 27-year-old who did manage to complete two dribbles but had little impact going forward besides that. Bailey is recovering from an injury so was taken off which was a decision that made sense.

Emi Buendia – 8

Buendia is back for the Villa and was back with a goal. His looping header was superb and exactly what he deserved after such a long time out. His defensive work was also superb with seven duels won and 100 tackle success.

Jhon Duran – 7

Duran plays, Duran scores at the moment and the Wycombe clash was no different. He did only see 25 per cent of his shots go on target but he didn’t let that discourage him. Although it could be said that he dived for the penalty, he still had to convert, which he did with aplomb.
